Most of the lenses coming into the shop with stiff focus problems are either 645 lenses or Press Universal lenses. This is caused by the focus helicoid grease which can harden over time causing stiff focus or a stuck focus ring. The solution is a complete disassembly of the lens to remove the focus helicoid and remove all traces of old lubrication from all threads. When the lens is apart, diaphragm blades will be cleaned if necessary and a new lithium based grease is applied lightly to the threads. The lens focus will be recollimated and the lens will back to new specs. It is quite a bit of labor to perform and cost varies depending on the lens with the lenses having floating elements priced higher for service.
